The full correspondence table
Every zhuyin symbol maps to exactly one pinyin spelling. The reverse is not true — pinyin rewrites some finals depending on what comes before them, which is the main reason the two systems are not a simple letter swap.

Where the two systems disagree
- Pinyin contracts iou, uei and uen to iu, ui and un after an initial. Zhuyin writes the full sound every time: ㄐㄧㄡ, ㄕㄨㄟ, ㄨㄣ.
- After j, q and x, pinyin drops the umlaut and writes ü as u. Zhuyin always writes ㄩ.
- Syllables with no initial get a y or w bolted on in pinyin — yi, wu, yuan. Zhuyin just writes the vowel.
- In zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci and si, the i is not a real vowel. Zhuyin writes the initial on its own.
- The first tone is unmarked in zhuyin but written ā in pinyin. The neutral tone is the other way round: a dot before the syllable in zhuyin, nothing at all in pinyin.
