ㄅㄆㄇㄈ

How to learn bopomofo

Bopomofo is a closed system of 37 symbols and 5 tones, which means you can finish it. Most adults recognise every symbol after two to four hours and read comfortably within a week. This page is the order to learn them in, and what to do at each stage.

The path, in order

  1. Learn the four lip sounds first

ㄅ ㄆ ㄇ ㄈ are the sounds the system is named after, and they map almost exactly onto English b, p, m, f. Starting here gives you four free symbols and the feeling that this is going to be manageable — which it is.

  2. Add the rest of the initials in their taught groups

    The remaining 17 initials come in tidy sets: tongue-tip (ㄉ ㄊ ㄋ ㄌ), throat (ㄍ ㄎ ㄏ), smiling (ㄐ ㄑ ㄒ), curled-tongue (ㄓ ㄔ ㄕ ㄖ) and flat-tongue (ㄗ ㄘ ㄙ). Learn each group as a group — they share a mouth position, so they reinforce each other.

  3. Then the three medials

ㄧ ㄨ ㄩ are only three symbols but they appear constantly, because they sit between an initial and a final. ㄩ is the one non-English sound: say ㄧ and round your lips without moving your tongue.

  4. Finish with the thirteen finals

Simple vowels first (ㄚ ㄛ ㄜ ㄝ), then the gliding pairs (ㄞ ㄟ ㄠ ㄡ), then the nasals (ㄢ ㄣ ㄤ ㄥ) and finally ㄦ. The nasals are the ones worth slowing down on — ㄢ/ㄤ and ㄣ/ㄥ are the pairs learners confuse for months.

  5. Learn the tones alongside, not afterwards

Do not save tones for later. Every syllable you practise should carry a tone from the start, or you will build a habit you have to undo. There are only four marks plus a dot, and one of them is written as nothing at all.

  6. Practise until recognition is automatic

Recognition, not recall, is the goal — you need to see ㄑ and hear it without a pause for translation. This is the part that takes repetition rather than understanding, and it is exactly what the app's games are for.

The four mistakes that cost people the most time

  • Reading zhuyin through pinyin

If you learned pinyin first, it is tempting to translate ㄑ → q → "ch" in your head. That double hop is slower than reading the symbol directly, and it imports the pronunciation errors you were trying to escape. Attach each symbol to a sound, not to a letter.

  • Skipping the retroflex/flat distinction

ㄓ/ㄗ, ㄔ/ㄘ and ㄕ/ㄙ sound similar to most beginners, so they get glossed over. They are three of the highest-frequency contrasts in the language. Learn them as pairs, deliberately, early.

  • Learning symbols without audio

A chart with romanisation next to each symbol teaches you a spelling, not a sound. Every symbol on this site has a recording for exactly this reason.

  • Practising only in one direction

Being able to see ㄆ and say "p" does not mean you can hear "p" and write ㄆ. Drill both ways or half the system stays passive.
